Cystitis: What you need to know about the painful inflammation of the urinary tract

Cystitis is the inflammation in the bladder and is usually the result of a urinary tract infection.
Other possible causes are incomplete emptying of the bladder (e.g. due to pregnancy or enlarged prostate), damage or irritation around the urethra and transfer of bacteria from the anus to the urethra (e.g. with sexual intercourse) .

Typical symptoms of cystitis are urgent and frequent urination, pain and stinging during urination, and pain locally where the bladder is located.
Cystitis strikes women more often, as the opening of their urethra is closer to the anus and pathogenic bacteria are more easily transported. But in men it can be more serious, especially if there is an underlying problem in the bladder or prostate (eg prostatitis) or a blockage in the urinary tract (due to a cancerous tumor or enlarged prostate
If the cyst inflammation is mild, it usually goes away within a few days. Drinking fluids and taking painkillers are recommended. It is also recommended to abstain from sex to avoid worsening the symptoms. If the inflammation is severe, an antibiotic may be needed.

If the infection is not treated, it can cause a kidney infection.
