Category-specific checks
Choose cosmetics, food supplements or foods. The original cosmetic policy is combined with its extensions. Supplements and foods use their respective sections of the extended policy. Exclusions do not automatically transfer between categories.
Three result states
A direct match identifies a listed term or implemented family rule. A review flag indicates a conditional exception, ambiguous name or possible OCR error. No match means that the available rules did not identify a term; it does not confirm acceptance.
A transparent label index
The index is 100 × (unique declared ingredients minus matches) / unique declared ingredients. Each reviewed line has equal weight. Review flags produce a range, counting them as matches at the lower end and excluding them at the upper end. For 10 ingredients, 2 direct matches and 1 review flag, the result is 70–80/100.
This is not a safety, health or nutritional score, and it is not Sikalias certification. Even 100/100 cannot establish full compliance. Adding unmatched ingredients may raise the index, so it should not be used to rank products. The check does not assess medicines, treatment suitability or allergies.
Exceptions and unseen criteria
Phenoxyethanol traces in specific premixed actives, approved pH-adjusting uses of certain acids, and preservatives restricted only at undefined high concentrations require further information. Photos cannot establish pesticide residues, undeclared impurities, plant origin, extraction methods or production practices.
Policy and privacy
Version 2026-09-15.1 implements 143 original cosmetic clauses plus extended-policy additions, as 167 rules with selected names, aliases, families and exceptions. Open-ended families are not an exhaustive chemical dictionary.
Ingredients are read and checked on your phone. The label photo and text are not sent outside your device. The app does not keep a scan history. Review the complete ingredient text before viewing the result.
The Sikalias Formulated Without philosophy
A formulation starts with choices: which materials to use, for what purpose and with what supporting evidence. Sikalias Formulated Without describes the ingredient choices of Sikalias Pharmaceutical Laboratories, with exclusions and exceptions specific to cosmetics, food supplements and foods.
Legal compliance is the starting point. The Sikalias policy adds internal formulation criteria. Exclusion under this policy does not mean an ingredient is prohibited by law or that a product is unsafe.
Research behind the choices
Replacing an emulsifier, preservative or excipient changes more than a line on a label. Texture, stability, preservation, packaging compatibility and the product's intended function need to be assessed together. For supplements, the form and performance of ingredients also matter.
A shared philosophy gives development and reformulation a consistent framework. Its value comes from scientific work, raw-material documentation and assessment of the finished formulation. Absence of an ingredient alone does not demonstrate superior quality or efficacy.
Origin and environmental criteria
The policy emphasises plant or biotechnology-derived materials and sets restrictions for certain animal-derived ingredients, nanoforms, microplastics and polymers. Documented exceptions remain part of the policy, including specific animal-derived cosmetic ingredients requiring clarification.
Not all synthetic polymers or silicones are microplastics: material form and properties matter under the EU definition. Natural origin alone does not establish safety or a lower environmental footprint. EU guidance on microplastics.
Cosmetics
Examples covered by the base and extended policy include SLS/SLES, parabens, formaldehyde donors, BHA/BHT, specified silicones, PEGs/PPGs and carbomers, alongside phthalates, triclocarban, plastic microbeads and terms relating to ethanolamines and artificial colours.

Food supplements
The supplement section includes artificial sweeteners, EDTA, titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate, polysorbate 80, carrageenan, animal gelatin and specified artificial flavours. It calls for plant-derived capsules and excipients. Its wording on benzoates and sorbates concerns high concentrations without a numerical threshold, so the app asks for clarification.
The EU authorisation for E171 as a food additive was withdrawn in 2022. This is a regulatory requirement, not an additional advantage of an exclusion list. Cosmetics and medicines fall under separate frameworks. European Commission questions and answers on E171.
Foods
The food section includes high-fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oils, MSG, nitrates/nitrites, specified flour treatment agents, BVO and artificial azo colours. It also includes sourcing, pesticide residue and oil extraction criteria.
A label photograph cannot test for glyphosate residues or certify non-GMO origin or a production method. These need separate evidence. Foods for special medical purposes have specific compositional requirements and are used under medical supervision; the app's index does not assess their suitability. The label tool shows which ingredient name matches which policy rule and where clarification is needed, giving you specific information to discuss with your pharmacist. Its index is not a safety, efficacy or nutritional quality score, or a product certification.
